AN INTRO: WHAT IS CBD?

JUNE 25, 2019 by ALLISON GLENNIE

CBD (which stands for cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound found in the resin of flowering cannabis plants. CBD is just one type of cannabinoid out of hundreds present in the cannabis plant. These compounds interact with our endocannabinoid system, which consists of a network of endogenous receptors. Those receptors contribute to the mediation of inflammation, nausea, pain, and an array of other biological functions throughout our bodies.

To simplify a fairly complex series of biological systems and reactions, CBD is therapeutic in nature, non-intoxicating, easy to self-administer, and due to its adaptable nature, has been used to treat a variety of symptoms - from pain and inflammation to anxiety and depression. Scientific research into CBD is booming in popularity, and we are learning more about its potential health benefits than ever before.

So far, this research is pointing to the conclusion that, despite years of propaganda against cannabis products, CBD is not a snake-oil “cure-all” that cures nothing. It’s a compound that supports critical biological functions in all of us and is a vital component in the overall health and efficiency of our bodies.

While the growing buzz around CBD and its purported health benefits has seemingly burst into the zeitgeist, Cannabis-related products have had a long and complex history. While cannabis has been cultivated for medicinal and industrial uses for centuries, CBD was first isolated in 1940. Due to many influences, including its role in an ever-changing political landscape, cannabis has only recently been the subject of intensive scientific study. As the body of research surrounding CBD grows, so does our understanding of its effects on the human body.

According to Harvard University Health, numerous studies have shown the versatility of CBD as a potential treatment for the mediation of symptoms associated with both physical and mental ailments.

WHAT IS CBD USED FOR?

So far, research has shown that CBD reduces the number of seizures in patients with certain extreme epileptic disorders. These disorders typically do not respond to traditional pharmaceuticals, and there are a number of truly moving testimonial videos that highlight just how drastic and transformative treatment with cannabis oil and CBD can be. Check out an example below:

Research has also shown CBD to be an effective treatment for various forms of chronic pain. A recent study has demonstrated how CBD actually “inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat.”

Another study from The European Journal of Pain concluded that topical CBD treatment could lower the pain and inflammation of arthritis. We are really just breaching the surface of our understanding of CBD’s beneficial effects on the body and mind. In recent years, there has been very promising research displaying CBD and the endocannabinoid system's impact on mental illnesses from anxiety, to schizophrenia.

This research, and the testimonial of countless individuals suggests that CBD has an extensive healing potential which is finally being recognized by the scientific and wellness communities. What was once a fringe remedy is quickly becoming a massive industry, drawing attention from celebrity, pharmaceutical firms, and big business alike.
